Part of a larger body of work titled, Monument a Surface, which visualizes a constellation of research into acts of memorializing and monument-making among juxtaposing histories of South Florida.
"The African Cemetery, Key West, FL" renders the intersection of three affective sites together: The AIDS Memorial, The African Cemetery, and Pulse Nightclub (site of the June 12, 2016, mass shooting). This project specifically uses the history of vernacular photography to question gestures that are meant to honor experiences of loss and, in the process, questions the audiences for whom the gestures serve.
